Pressure Relief Mattresses Prevent Bed Sores

An alternating pressure mattress system is used in hospitals to protect the skin of patients. These systems have mattresses that are made from several air cells. The cells are cyclically deflated and inflated, so that the deflated cells relieve pressure, to stop the patient's skin from softening. The inflated cells give support to the patient. Control systems connected to the mattress manage the deflation and inflation cycles. Usually, these units are used to care for patients with vulnerable skin, like burns victims and those at risk of contracting decubitus ulcers.

There are several types of patients who are particularly prone to develop bed sores. Bed ridden patients, or those confined to wheelchairs are part of this group. These people can not move themselves, and can be affected by pressure sores, if pressure is not removed from the appropriate areas of their skin after a couple of hours. Paralyzed people, comatose people and those recuperating from hip fractures, or similar mobility restrictions, can suffer injuries from pressure points too. These people can not alter the position of their bodies without assistance. The Invacare Mattress Overlay is made from gel foam and offers users a comfortable support surface to reduce pressure points.
